What Is Better for Low-Volume, High-Mix Wave Soldering, Pallets or Fingers?

For high-mix, there is no doubt that pallets can help ship more product at the end of the day than with even a large finger wavesolder. Take, for example, four lots of 25 PCBs, all of which are different sizes: 4 x 4", 8 x 8", 10 x 10" and 12 x12". With the finger wave, you have to wait until the last board comes out of the machine before you can change the conveyor for the next lot. With the pallet wave, the next lot is already started. As each lot continues, the finger wave falls further and further behind. In conclusion, even with the large, low-cost, power sucking, Chinese fingers waves are not the best solution for high-mix low- to mid-volume customers. Can Lead-Free Products Be Soldered in Ovens with Less than 7 Zones?

The answer is yes, you can solder lead-free with a batch oven, 3 and 5 zone ovens if the technology of the ovens can give you the power and heat transfer needed. For high-mix, low-volume, Essemtec leads the way. We have been selling our products worldwide with a lead-free guarantee. By the July date of this year, Essemtec machines will all have lead-free PCBs in them, produced on our 3 and 5 zone ovens. With real world experience, Essemtec leads the way with award winning small oven technology that perform like ovens costing more than double the cost.
