Do Variations in the Plated Through-Hole (PTH) Diameter of a PCB Effect the Compliant Pin Application Process?

The proper application of compliant pins can be effected significantly by the PTH. Actual retention force (pin to board) and electrical performance are directly related to the quality of the connection between the pin and PTH. If this fit is too lose or too tight, the overall effect is a bad connection. If a PTH diameter is below specification, the end result is excessive insertion force. This can lead to a range of failures from pin buckling to damaging the PCB or pin. If a PTH diameter is above specification, the compliant section will not be compressed enough to give the “spring” effect needed to provide the required normal force on the hole, resulting in a loose fit and retention force that is too low.

It is key to note that both excessive and insufficient insertion force lead to potential quality issues. The upside, however, is that there are ways of monitoring and controlling both minimum and maximum force in the pressing process to ensure quality insertions with traceability for quality control.
