My reflow oven is very stable and
is capable of running and controlling lead-free process
requirements. I have heard of recommendations for process
monitoring. Why would I need this?
Process monitoring goes beyond being a
watchdog on the stability and control of the oven settings.
Process monitoring for lead-free reflow will ensure that
ALL parameters that affect the reflow profile during production
are taken into account. This cannot be done by simply having
a built-in system that is monitoring oven control settings.
This would only monitor machine settings. The problem is
that even if the machine, a reflow oven in this case, is
controlling within its specifications there can be changes
to the actual process that occurs on the product. These
changes simply can be a difference in the loading of product
into the oven, control of thermocouple positions changed
during maintenance, build-up of residue from the fluxes
over time, changes in the exhaust flow, or even operator
error inputting settings or changing over products. Though
any one of these items may be minor, the fact is that the
reflow specifications for lead-free solder are very restricting,
and any change for any of these situations along with the
normal variation of the process can combine to drive the
process out of spec. If more than one of these occurs simultaneously,
there will be trouble. Also some of these items may occur
slowly over time and only monitoring the reflow profile,
in real-time, will catch them before they cause defects.
Unlike eutectic solders, lead-free materials
do not allow for breaches above or below the limits without
the high probability of problems or defects on the product.
But if you are monitoring the actual process (generating
and monitoring profile data for every product, i.e., ramp
rate, reflow time, peak, etc.) any change from any variable
that affects the process will be reflected in the real-time
process profile monitoring. So you will know when to address
changes to the process and how to correct them.
Process monitoring also gives the added
benefit of automatic verification and documentation for
customer requirements as well as complete production traceability
for the reflow process. Real-time continuous process monitoring
of the reflow profile should be an automatic for lead-free
reflow. Just be certain you have a system that is accurate
and well proven in the field. Without reflow profile monitoring,
you are running blind and it is a matter of when — not
if — you will have defects and problems.
