  Press-Fit Component Technology
By Dante Parenti
Product Manager Tyco Press Fit Division

I've heard of terminals for PCBs that use a press-fit application instead of a through-hole solder.  Is this a new technology and what advantages can I see by moving to press-fit in my production?

Press-fit technology is a proven application method that actually dates back to the 1970's.  Products from individual pins through mass termination press-fit connectors have be utilized in a wide range of applications for quality and durability conscious industries such as military, aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications.  By using compliant pin technology, manufacturers eliminate the need for solder completely in a fast, simple, and completely lead-free operation.  Discreet pins are stitched into a PCB by an insertion machine while press-fit connectors are applied by a press.  In either case, the component is pressed into the board and the compliant section of the pin provides an gas-tight and vibration resistant connection.  If an application system with force monitoring and control is used, the manufacturer can minimize applied cost through reductions in costly scrap and rework.
